What is the GK-12 Program?
This is a three-year program funded by the National Science Foundation. Physics graduate students (Masters and PhD students) and advanced undergraduates from UNM receive fellowships to work 10 hours per week at a school in the West Mesa Cluster. The purpose of the program is to provide additional resources to schools to contribute to the improvement of science and math instruction.

What do the graduate Fellows do?
The work of the Fellow is determined collaboratively by the teachers and the Fellow to best match the needs of the school with the skills and abilities of the graduate student. Activities might include:
• working with teachers to design and improve inquiry experiences for students;
• modifying existing lessons to incorporate key concepts of optics and photonics;
• providing content information to teachers about physics, especially photonics;
• working with students on science projects;
• assisting with science and math clubs;
• assisting with family science or math nights (or other community outreach related to science and math).
Please note: Fellows are NOT substitute teachers nor are they student teachers.
